What the Jain Om means
The Jain Om is formed from the first letters of the Panch Parmeshthi, the five supreme beings honoured in the Navkar Mantra.
When the sounds join (sandhi), a + a + ā becomes ā, ā + u becomes o, and o + m gives om.

Omniscient teachers who have destroyed the four destructive (ghati) karmas and show the path while still in a body.

padhamakkhara-nipphanno omkaro pancha-parametthi.Arihant, Ashariri, Acharya, Upadhyaya and Muni: the Omkar is made from their first letters, and so it stands for the five Parmeshthis. This Prakrit verse is quoted in Jain texts to explain the symbol.
The colours in the diagram are the traditional colours of the five, also used in Navpad worship: white, red, yellow, green, and black or dark blue.
